AzTEA put out their bi-annual call seeking teachers with innovative ideas for how to use technology to better instruct their students. One MUSD teacher, with an innovative idea for using technology to creatively support instruction, turned that idea into a winning grant proposal.
Maricopa Wells Middle School math teacher, Robyn Rice, applied for a QWEST/AzTEA Classroom Technology grant and was just notified of her award of nearly $10,000.
Robyn will be publicly recognized, along with other statewide winners, at the second of the Annual AzTEA Tri-Conferences Series, ‘Teaching and Technology‘ held on January 26th in Tucson.
Robyn’s winning proposal calls for SmartBoards, projectors and laptops to support math instruction. She describes her vision: “The students will use the technology to understand vertex-edge graphing, and apply those concepts to a real-world problem. The students will be designing and building a Miniature City that is built to scale. They will utilize the technology from the grant to create a vertex-edge graph that will allow them to supply their city with water, using the most efficient and cost-effective route. “
Curriculum Director JoEtta Gonzales recently explained that vertex-edge graphing is often a very difficult concept to teach and is covered on state AIMS exams.
Technology Director Gina Pinch looks forward to her department supporting Robyn’s project, helping Robyn and Principal Stephanie Sharp to insure network compatibility of all the hardware specified in the grant proposal.
The IT Department and EdTech are very proud of Robin’s success at articulating her vision, and for her membership in AzTEA. Robyn’s effort and success acts as a reminder to all educators, who would like to bring innovation to their instruction, that grants are available, and Maricopa teachers can and do create their own opportunities!
Please join me in congratulating Robyn!
MUSD teachers, there is still time to apply for the second wave of QWEST/AzTEA Grants which will be awarded in March at the annual MEC Conference (Microcomputers in Education) at ASU – Tempe.
